Teddy's Family

October 2021

We knew when we got married that we wanted to adopt at some point in our future. A few years into being married, we got connected with L’Arche, an international organization of communities where people with and without disabilities live together, promoting the worth and dignity of people with all abilities. The L’Arche community in our city is just a few miles away from our home! Becoming friends with adults with disabilities changed our lives forever - our friends at L’Arche are some of the most amazing people we’ve ever met and we feel so lucky to call them our friends. Our relationship with L’Arche made us realize we wanted to pursue adoption of a child with special needs.

Thanks to Google, we quickly found the National Down Syndrome Adoption Network - Stephanie at NDSAN was such a huge help in the adoption process! Within a few months of being on the registry at NDSAN, we were chosen by a birth mom who was due to deliver 3 weeks later! We packed our bags and headed to Texas where our sweet Teddy was born. Not only did we get to be there for Teddy’s birth, we got to spend time with Teddy’s birth mom - one of the most surprising and special gifts of our entire adoption process.

Teddy spent 6 weeks in the NICU and on December 6th we made the drive home as a family of 3. Teddy turns 1 at the end of October which is Down syndrome Awareness Month! Teddy has been the joy of our lives and every day with him is better than the last.
