Jerome’s Family

Our son Benedict was born in 2020 with a significant heart defect and a diagnosis of Trisomy 21.  While our family was initially filled with fear and concern, Benny quickly opened our hearts, amplifying our capacity to love in ways we never imagined. With his special needs and extra chromosome, Benedict brought us together in tenderness, laughter, and vulnerability.  Shortly after his birth, before he’d even graduated from the NICU, Liz and I felt called to someday adopt another child with Down syndrome.  As we became his greatest cheerleaders, he became the king of our family. When our “King Ben” was just 3 years old, he tragically passed away.

In the wake of his loss, we’ve continued to pursue the adoption of another child with this special gift.  We officially registered with the National Down Syndrome Adoption Network in 2023 and were matched with baby Jerome one year later.  Since “JJ” has joined the Joseph clan, we have once again been overcome by the transformative power of an extra 21st chromosome. His very presence fills the room with smiles.  As Jerome exited those NICU doors last month, his 5 siblings adorned him with gleeful hugs and kisses.  He’s loving all the attention and thriving in the many arms that carry him around all day.

Through our adoption journey thus far, we’ve been blessed with an abundance of support.  We are beyond grateful for the direct support GLADS has provided.  Their support has made our adoption of baby Jerome possible.
